Guiseley rode their luck at times to
record a victory over Eastwood Town in this game between two of the
teams tipped to be amongst the promotion contenders come the end of May.
Steve Burton opened the scoring for the home side only for ex-Guiseley
centre back Simon Sturdy to restore parity for the visitors before last
season leading scorer James Hanson opened his account for the season
with what proved to be the winner.
Guiseley opened the scoring after 16
minutes as a result of James Cotterill winning two successive tackles
and then sending David Brown away down the left for the diminutive
striker to deliver a cross to into the path of Steve Burton who powered
the ball in through a sea of legs. Ian Holmes had a chance at the other
end but Tom Morgan came to Guiseley’s rescue and Brown flashed a shot
just over the angle for the home side.
The dangerous Holmes created space
for himself and lobbed over Morgan only for a Guiseley defender to clear
the ball out from under the bar. Moments later Sturdy found the target
with a looping header from a free kick on 31 minutes.
The second period opened with another former Guiseley player Richard
Dunning making a fine last ditch tackle to deny the livewire Brown.
Holmes continued his quest but was denied by the post and Peter Knox
should have done better with the follow up but headed wide. Hanson had a
goalbound shot blocked by Sturdy but then stooped to head the ball past
Shane Redmond from close in on 67 minutes following a corner on the
right to maintain the hosts unbeaten start to the season.
