Guiseley secured a home derby match
against Garforth Town on Saturday 27 September with this First
Qualifying Round win against Selby Town. Although the Lions should have
had the tie sown up by halftime after missing a string of chances they
finally put paid to their plucky opponents in the last third of the
match. Goals from Adam Muller, Simeon Bambrook , David Brown and Steve
Burton finally subduing Selby’s hero on the night, keeper Adam
Mitchell.
The opening attack by the visitors set
the scene for a first half that Guiseley dominated but were unable to
find the back of the net as Bailey Camfield sent over a sweet cross
which James Hanson headed just wide. Chris Ovington’s low drive nearly
caught Mitchell out as it bobbled just in front of him.
Adam Muller was proving to be a handful
for the home side and his ball across the six yard just needed poking
home before Steve Burton had the chance to score from the spot but his
penalty was pushed away by Mitchell. The home side, playing some good
one touch football, created a golden chance for unmarked Seam Gorman
only for the striker to put his header wide with only Tom Morgan to
beat.
Selby should have been punished for the
miss but the agile Mitchell pulled of a stunning double save from
Ovington and Hanson before the latter’s head scraped the wrong side of
the post from the resulting corner.
The second half opened with Ovington’s
low cross being met by Hanson only for Mitchell to block the effort.
Steve Lyon tried his luck at the other end and shot straight at Morgan
with Gorman free at the far post. With chances going begging manager
Steve Kittrick played his master card in bringing David Brown off the
subs bench which proved to be the catalyst for Guiseley to finally make
their superiority count.
Brown was straight into action as once
again Mitchell tipped his shot over the bar to deny the visitors for the
umpteenth time. The breakthrough finally came from a short corner and
inch perfect cross from the left which allowed Muller to plant a
powerful header past Mitchell and open his goal scoring account for
Guiseley.
As so often happens the hero of the hour
then turned villain when Mitchell fumbled a harmless looking cross
straight into the path of Bambrook who had only just come off the subs
bench leaving the burly ex-Farsley player with the simplest of tap-ins
on his debut.
Brown was now causing mayhem in the home
defence with his chasing and harrying and created an opening for Burton
which was only stopped by a timely block by Andrew Hart. Then a stray
clearance from Hart under pressure from Danny Husband saw Brown get his
just reward as he pounced on the loose ball and fired past Mitchell. And
still the diminutive striker wasn’t finished forcing Mitchell into a
rash kick that presented Burton to atone for his penalty miss with a low
drive into the corner.
The Guiseley display will certainly have
given the visiting officials from Eastwood and Garforth food for thought
and it will be interesting what tactics the two teams adopt on
consecutive Saturdays. It also has to be said that despite the gap of
two divisions between the two teams Selby gave a good account of
themselves on the night and contributed to a fast, free flowing game of
football and with steadier finishing they could have made things a
little tougher for the visitors. |
