Winterton Rangers 2:12  Guiseley

Guiseley Ladies maintained their successful run in all three Womens cups with a comprehensive win over Lincolnshire side Winterton Rangers. Guiseley gave debuts to new signings Faye Shipman and Dom Balmond, who have joined the squad since Leeds Carnegie Development folded in August.

They proved to be valuable additions to the team, scoring three of the away sides’ goals between them. Guiseley winger Rachel Dainty put the ladies ahead after 20 minutes following some neat work in midfield. Dainty struck the ball well from 25 yards out, the ball swerved in the air and beat the stranded Rangers’ ‘keeper Kerrie Eccles.

The away side dominated possession throughout the first 35 minutes of the game, and scored twice in five minutes through striker Katie Jesson and Dainty again, from a corner kick. A lapse in concentration gave Winterton hope on 40 minutes, when striker Alex McNeive pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the Guiseley penalty box.

McNeive drove the ball passed ‘keeper Farquhar to pull a goal back for the home side from the Lincolnshire County League. Guiseley seemed to switch off for ten minutes and awarded Winterton a second goal just before half-time, when Stacey Blackwell for Winterton struck to the ball  well from the right wing, which beat all the defenders and Guiseley ‘keeper Farquhar then flew into the top corner of the net. Guiseley looked rattled and welcomed the half-time interval with the score at 3-2.

The second half saw a settled Guiseley side appear, focused on the task at hand. Further goals from Guiseley players Vicky Winters, Sarah Dunn, Jo Forrest, Faye Shipman and Dom Balmond gave the ladies a 12-2 lead, and allowed the away side to play some attractive football. New signing Dom Balmond was player of the match and thoroughly deserved it in her first game for the club.

Guiseley Ladies now face league rivals Barnsley in the 2nd Qualifying Round on Sunday 12th October at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium in Barnsley, 2pm kick-off. Their next league game is this Sunday against top of the league Darlington RA, 2pm kick-off at Nethermoor. Please come along and support the ladies!
